What needed to be solved.
Waiting for the first appointment at BUP can be long, uncertain and difficult to navigate. Young people and their parents often lack clear information about what happens next and what they can do while waiting. At the same time, young people need to feel ownership over their own situation rather than being told what they should do.
The challenge was therefore not simply to fill the waiting period. It was to make the waiting period feel more meaningful, without adding another thing they had to do.

What I learned.
We looked at existing research and user data, interviewed young adults with previous experience with BUP, worked with a 10th-grade class, spoke with BUP professionals and tested the developing concept.

The experience had to feel relevant to the individual.
The waiting period could be used as an opportunity for reflection and small changes.
The experience had to feel like something made for young people, rather than another health service telling them what to do.
What I decided.
Create an experience that gives young people space to understand their own situation and explore what might help them while waiting.

What changed.
The project resulted in a developed concept and interactive prototype, supported by design guidelines and an introduction programme.
The concept received positive responses from both young people and BUP professionals, and created a stronger understanding of how the waiting period could become a more meaningful part of the journey towards help.

The project left questions about how the app would work in practice and what effect it could have over time. I will continue exploring these questions through Design 9, again in collaboration with NTNU and St. Olavs Hospital, to investigate the concept further and follow up on what remained unanswered.
